Why Used Pallets Beat New Ones on Sustainability

In short: A reused pallet avoids the harvesting, milling and transport of a new one while keeping carbon locked in existing wood. Across its extra working lives, one recycled pallet can prevent tens of kilograms of CO₂e versus buying new each cycle.

The problem with 'just buy new'

Roughly 500 million new pallets are manufactured in the United States each year, and hundreds of millions of used ones circulate alongside them. Treating a pallet as single-use means every trip demands fresh lumber — and the environmental cost of that lumber is front-loaded into harvesting, milling, drying and freight before the pallet carries a single box.

Reuse changes the denominator. Spread the embodied footprint of one pallet across five, ten, or fifteen working lives and the per-trip impact collapses. That's the entire premise of a circular pallet economy.

Where the carbon actually hides

Wood is a carbon store. A pallet that stays in service keeps that carbon locked up; a pallet that's landfilled eventually releases it — often as methane, a far more potent greenhouse gas than CO₂. Diverting pallets from landfill therefore delivers a double benefit: avoided new production and avoided end-of-life emissions.

Repair is the highest-leverage move of all. Replacing one cracked board returns a pallet to service for a fraction of the material and energy of building new — the single most carbon-efficient thing you can do with a damaged pallet.

What it means for your supply chain

Switching a program from new to graded recycled pallets typically cuts packaging carbon and cost simultaneously — a rare win-win. It also generates a documented diversion record you can put straight into ESG and Scope 3 disclosures.

The takeaway: 'used' isn't a compromise. For most freight, a graded recycled pallet performs identically to new while carrying a fraction of the footprint.
