From broken pallet to feedstock

Consistent particle size and a clean look are what separate premium mulch from a pile of chips.
There is a caveat buyers should understand: pallet-derived mulch may include a mix of wood species and, unless carefully sourced, could contain fragments of treated wood. Reputable producers keep treated and chemically contaminated stock out of the mulch stream and market their product honestly. For general landscaping the material performs fine, but it is not the same as certified hardwood bark mulch, and pricing should reflect that.
Animal bedding demands the cleanest wood
Animal bedding is the most quality-sensitive of the three streams and the most rewarding when done right. Bedding must be clean, low-dust, absorbent, and free of any chemically treated wood, so it draws only from the cleanest untreated softwood and hardwood cores. Fastener removal has to be nearly perfect, because a nail in bedding can lame a horse or injure cattle, exposing the producer to real liability.
Because of these constraints, bedding-grade feedstock often comes from segregated, known-clean pallet sources rather than mixed general recovery. The reward for that discipline is a product that commands a premium from equine and livestock buyers who cannot risk contamination. This is a stream to enter deliberately, with tight source control and testing, not something to improvise from whatever happens to be in the scrap pile.
Biomass fuel and the energy market
The lowest-grade woody material finds a home as biomass fuel, chipped and sold to boilers and power plants that co-fire wood for heat and electricity. Biomass buyers care most about moisture content and BTU value, and they tolerate more variability than mulch or bedding customers, which makes this the natural outlet for the roughest fraction of ground pallet wood. Lower moisture means higher energy value and a better price per ton.
Biomass also handles material the other streams reject, including some treated wood where the receiving facility has emissions controls rated for it. This makes biomass the pressure-relief valve of a recovery yard, absorbing whatever cannot be sold as mulch or bedding while still diverting it from landfill. It rarely commands top dollar, but it keeps the diversion rate high and turns a disposal liability into at least a modest return.
Contamination is the whole ballgame
Every one of these streams lives or dies on contamination control. Metal fasteners threaten equipment and end users, treated wood threatens compliance and product integrity, and plastic strapping or shrink wrap fouls the grind. A yard that cannot keep these out will produce inconsistent, low-value product and eventually lose the customers who care about quality, which are the customers who pay well.
The defense is layered: source segregation at intake, thorough denailing, magnetic and manual separation, and screening after grinding. Each layer catches what the previous one missed. Getting this right is unglamorous but decisive, because the difference between premium bedding and landfill-bound trash is often nothing more than how disciplined the contamination controls were on that particular batch.
Making the diversion economics work
The financial case for grinding is that it flips disposal from a cost into a product. Landfilling broken pallets means paying tipping fees and hauling; grinding them means selling mulch, bedding, and fuel while eliminating those fees. Even at modest per-ton prices, avoided disposal cost plus product revenue can make a grinding operation pay for itself and push a yard toward genuine zero-landfill status.
The larger payoff is strategic. A yard that can profitably absorb every unrepairable pallet can accept large, mixed, messy loads that a repair-only operation would have to turn away. That capability wins contracts, because a customer clearing a warehouse wants one hauler who takes everything, not a picky buyer who leaves the junk behind. Grinding capacity is what lets you say yes to the whole load.
