A stringer pallet is built on two or three continuous longitudinal boards, the stringers, with deck boards nailed across them. Forks enter between the stringers, so true access is two-way, though notched stringers allow partial four-way entry for forks while still blocking a pallet jack from the notched sides. A block pallet replaces the stringers with nine blocks, at the corners, edges, and center, joined by top and bottom deck boards and stringer boards, giving unobstructed four-way access from every side.

That structural difference drives everything downstream. The block design distributes load through discrete posts and typically carries more weight with better rigidity, while the stringer design is simpler, lighter, and cheaper to build and fix. Neither is universally better; the correct choice is the one that matches how forklifts, jacks, and automation actually approach your loads day to day.

Entry Access and Handling

True four-way entry matters more than people assume. In a busy facility, an operator who can pick a pallet from any side without repositioning the truck saves seconds on every move, and those seconds compound across thousands of moves. Block pallets and their full four-way access shine in dense, fast operations and anywhere a pallet jack must enter from the 48-inch side, which notched stringers do not allow.

If your flow is simpler, forklift-only, staged in one orientation, and moved two-way, a stringer pallet handles it fine at lower cost. The question to ask is not which pallet is more capable but which capabilities your operation actually uses. Paying for four-way block access you never exploit is waste; lacking it where your jacks need it is a daily friction that quietly slows the floor.

Durability and Load Performance

Block pallets generally win on durability and racking performance. The post-and-board construction resists the racking sag and stringer cracking that eventually retire stringer pallets, so a block pallet often survives more trips and holds up better when racked unsupported across beams. For heavy or dense loads stored in selective racking, that stiffness translates into safety margin and fewer failures.

Stringer pallets are perfectly capable within their range, and a well-built hardwood stringer pallet carries substantial floor loads. Their vulnerability is the stringer itself: a forklift tine strike can crack it, and once cracked the pallet loses integrity. Block pallets absorb tine impacts into replaceable blocks and are more forgiving of rough handling, which is part of why automated lines standardize on them.

Repairability and Total Cost

Repair economics often favor stringer pallets. A cracked stringer is commonly fixed with a companion block, a quick, cheap repair that returns the pallet to service, and the recycled stringer market is deep and liquid. Block pallets can be repaired too, but the repairs can be more involved and the recycled block supply is thinner in North America, so parts and cores may cost more.

Fold this into total cost per trip rather than judging on purchase price. A block pallet costs more up front and may cost more to repair, but if it delivers 40 trips versus 20 for a stringer, the per-trip math can favor block. Conversely, in a lossy open loop where pallets frequently disappear, the cheaper, easily replaced stringer minimizes the sting of each loss. The right answer depends on your trip count and shrinkage.

Automation and Pooling Realities

Automated warehouses and the major pallet pools have largely standardized on block construction because its rigidity and consistent four-way entry play well with conveyors, robotics, and AS/RS. If you interface with a pool or run automation, block is often effectively mandatory, and the decision is made for you by the equipment and partner ecosystem rather than by open comparison.

Stringer pallets remain dominant in one-way shipping, especially into retail where the pallet is not expected to return. For a shipper sending product out and not recovering the pallet, the lower-cost stringer minimizes the expensed asset. Map your pallet's journey: if it lives in automation or a pool, lean block; if it ships one-way into a manual environment, lean stringer.

Weight, Sustainability, and Handling Ergonomics

Block pallets tend to weigh more because of the additional lumber in the posts, which slightly raises freight weight and manual handling effort. Over a full trailer that added weight is usually negligible against product weight, but for weight-sensitive air or parcel-adjacent operations it can matter. Stringer pallets, being lighter, edge ahead where every pound of tare weight is scrutinized.

On sustainability, both are wood and both recycle well, but the calculus turns on lifespan and repairability. A block pallet that lasts more trips spreads its embodied material over more use, while a stringer pallet's easy repair keeps it in service cheaply. The greenest choice is the one that stays in productive service longest in your specific loop, which is another reason to decide from your actual trip data.

A Procurement Decision Framework

Score your operation on four axes: handling method, trip count, automation, and loss rate. High four-way handling, high trip counts, automation, and low loss all point toward block. Two-way handling, one-way shipping, manual environments, and high loss all point toward stringer. Where the axes conflict, weight them by cost impact and let the total-cost-per-trip model break the tie rather than defaulting to habit.

Whatever you choose, standardize it and write the construction spec into your purchase orders alongside grade and size. A facility that lets both types drift in ends up with mixed racking behavior, inconsistent repair, and diluted buying power. Deciding deliberately and buying consistently is worth more than agonizing over a marginal per-pallet difference between the two.
